Sometimes we just need to be reminded!

At the beginning of the semester John started the class by holding up a $20.00 bill. In the room of 200, he asked, "Who would like this $20 bill?"

Hands started going up. He said, "I am going to give this $20 to one of you but first, let me do this.

He proceeded to crumple up the $20 dollar bill. He then asked, "Who still wants it?"

Still the hands were up in the air. Well, he replied, "What if I do this?" And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now crumpled and dirty.

"Now, who still wants it?" Still the hands went into the air.

"My friends, we have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $20."

He continued, "Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value."

Dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, you are still priceless to those who DO LOVE you.

IF THIS WASN'T SO SAD IT MIGHT BE FUNNY

A Japanese company (Toyota) and an American company (General Motors) decided to have a canoe race on the Missouri River. Both teams practiced long and hard to reach their peak performance before the race.

On the big day, the Japanese won by a mile.

The Americans, very discouraged and depressed, decided to investigate the reason for the crushing defeat. A management team made up of senior management was formed to investigate and recommend appropriate action.

Their conclusion was the Japanese had 8 people rowing and 1 person steering, while the American team had 8 people steering and 1 person rowing.

Feeling a deeper study was in order, American management hired a consulting company and paid them a large amount of money for a second opinion. They advised, of course, that too many people were steering the boat, while not enough people were rowing.

Not sure of how to utilize that information, but wanting to prevent another loss to the Japanese, the rowing team's management structure was totally reorganized to 4 steering supervisors, 3 area steering superintendents and 1 assistant superintendent steering manager.

They also implemented a new performance system that would give the 1 person rowing the boat greater incentive to work harder. It was called the 'Rowing Team Quality First Program,' with meetings, dinners and free pens for the rower. There was discussion of getting new paddles, canoes and other equipment, extra vacation days for practices and bonuses.

The next year the Japanese won by two miles. Humiliated, the American management laid off the rower for poor performance, halted development of a new canoe, sold the paddles, and canceled all capital investments for new equipment. The money saved was distributed to the Senior Executives as bonuses and the next year's racing team was out-sourced to India .

Something else to think about:
Ford has spent the last thirty years moving all its factories out of the US, claiming they can't make money paying American wages.

TOYOTA has spent the last thirty years building more than a dozen plants inside the US. The last quarter's results:
TOYOTA makes 4 billion in profits
Ford racked up 9 billion in losses.

Ford folks are still scratching their heads.

One Trillion Dollars ...

What does one trillion dollars look like?

We'll start with a $100 dollar bill. Currently the largest U.S. Denomination in general circulation. Most everyone has seen them, slightly fewer have owned them. Guaranteed to make friends wherever they go.

A packet of one hundred $100 bills is less than 1/2" thick and contains $10,000. Fits in your pocket easily and is more than enough for week or two of shamefully decadent fun.

Believe it or not, this next little pile is $1 million dollars (100 packets of $10,000). You could stuff that into a grocery bag and walk around with it.

While a measly $1 million looked a little unimpressive, $100 million is a little more respectable. It fits neatly on a standard pallet.

And $1 BILLION dollars... Now we're really getting somewhere.

Next we'll look at ONE TRILLION dollars. What is a trillion dollars? Well, it's a million million. It's a thousand billion. It's a one followed by 12 zeros.

Preliminary Defense Guidelines

You need a minimum of 14 days notice to schedule your defense.
This is where your entire committee thoroughly goes over your work and attempts to narrow your focus even more - don't take it personally.
- You've worked hard on these 3 chapters
- yeah I know there is this article that just came out and will totally support your work
- But it's never going to be perfect and they're going to change it anyway!

You must submit 2 copies of your IRB education certificate. (You got it when you did the online test - first summer, Kay's class.) If you can't find it you can take the course again and get a new IRB education certificate

I don't know what your research will be, but it's highly likely that you will be exempt.
If you are examining archival records not associated with human subjects then you do not even need to fill out an IRB form.

We were to interview high school teachers and principals. So we filled out, per Jack's request, the Expedited form ~ amended mistakes and resubmitted, then we were granted Exempt Status
IRB must be approved before you collect your data.
From Prelim to IRB Approval was 14 weeks (with modifications to Chapter 2, Chapter 3, and modifications to IRB).

Data Collection

I used NVivo7 for a free 30-day trial (Qualitative Data Analysis software)
Cal's sister, Mary Beth Garvin does transcription if she has enough spare time. To Record, I used an ipod and converted it to an mp3 file, I posted it online, but you could email (depending on the size of your recording).
From our IRB approval to our Final Oral Defense was 8 weeks.

- F2 asks for a list of courses with instructor names, you can find these courses attached below called Course History.doc.
You need a minimum of 14 days notice to schedule your defense. Once you have requested your date check the GSEP Master Calendar to ensure they have scheduled your defense.
Jack required a 25 to 30 minute PowerPoint presentation (we spent the entire 2 hours presenting).
During this whole process, the final oral defense was actually the easiest part of the whole process - the scariest and most nerve racking part, but we knew our material, the PowerPoint gave us the crutch we needed.

From our Final Oral defense, making our modification adjustments, to APA completion was 15 weeks - we had to fix the formatting 3 times before it was good enough for APA.

- If you choose to use another's dissertation as a guide - choose one from Pepperdine done within the last year. (This point of Cal's can't be stressed enough...Pepperdine APA is unique. They are changing it all the time. Select a recent diss if at all possible.)

Allow a minimum of 6-weeks between APA submission and the posting of your degree (and that's if you have no modifications to make). We need to have our final edit in by the end of October for a mid-December posting.
World Cat ~ http://worldcat.org is a World Catalog Database, that can find any book ever written. Your search will display what libraries near you carry that title, It also has a link to citations (this gives a pop-up window that cites the book in about 5 different methods - APA is the first one). If you have a wish to use EndNote, there is also an EndNote link that will download all the information for that book into EndNote. I used this site for every book (sorry only a few periodicals) in my reference section.
Ebrary- If you highlight, copy and paste into your paper, the citation will automatically be given...COOL!
When citing a journal article, most of us know to italicise the Journal name, but I did not know you have to italicise the volume number as well

Before you print
- Check for white spaces
- Check for widows (you cannot start a paragraph on the proceeding page - with a single line).
- Check for orphans (you cannot finish a paragraph on the next page - with a single line).
- Check for tables that have split.
- Recheck your table of contents to ensure they reflect the correct page numbers.

First - formatting of tables in the table of contents, place a period after the table number. Table titles are NOT to be all CAPS:

I used cell formatting to create the horizontal lines, do not make horizontal lines more than 0.75 pt., or they think you are using bold lines and you cannot bold anything.

From our Preliminary Oral defense to APA completion was 8 months - I hope these notes help shorten the length of time you need to finish.

After APA ~ Guidelines for Graduation

Minimum 4 unbound copies of dissertation for binding - There is no fee for binding the first 4 copies, 3 copies are for university libraries; one copy is for the student.
Signature pages - minimum of 4, each with original signatures for each bound copy of the manuscript; obtain signatures from dissertation chair and your committee members.(The Manager for the Dissertation Support Office will obtain the signatures of the Associate Dean and the Dean). These pages serve as the opening pages for the dissertation. Make sure they are not bent are signed in black ink.
Any additional sets of the dissertation manuscript for personal use or committee members to be bound at a cost of $25.00 per each additional binding. A signature page with original signatures of the committee members must accompany each additional copy of the manuscript to be bound.
A completed and signed Doctoral Dissertation Agreement form, which is contained in the booklet, “Publishing Your Graduate Work with UMI Dissertation Publishing”.
- Please Note: You must select a publishing option –Open Access versus Traditional. The Open Access publishing option requires you to pay a one time fee of $95.00.
Completed “Earned Doctorate Survey” Please submit the certificate of online completion.
Two copy of the dissertation title page and abstract: The name of your dissertation chair should be included on the copy of the title page. Center the name underneath the month and year the dissertation was cleared for APA format on the title page (e.g., John Smith, Ph.D. - Dissertation Chairperson).

“Intent to Graduate” form ($65 fee)should have already been submitted by this time - if it was submitted earlier than 2 semesters ago, it must be resubmitted.

As a college student enrolled in an academic course, you are expected to adhere to the standards of behavior outlined in the Student Code of Conduct and the Scholastic Ethics Code. In particular, you are expected to cooperate with instructors in the performance of their duties and to refrain from obstructing other students in their pursuit of education.
In addition,

Learning mathematics requires a time investment on the part of the students. An average time investment is two to three hours per unit per week (e.g. nine hours per week for a three-unit class) in addition to the time spent in class.
If you are absent from class for any reason, you have assumed the responsibility for learning on your own the material presented in that class, obtaining a copy of the notes, assignments, any announcement made in class, and coming prepared to the next class.
You are responsible for knowing the information on the class syllabus given to you by your instructor.
In a class where homework is collected, it must be submitted when requested by the instructor, using the format specified by the instructor.
You must be officially enrolled to attend classes. If you miss more than three classes you may be withdrawn for non-attendance. A student may also be withdrawn from the class due to disruptive behavior; such behavior includes, but is not limited to, talking during lecture. (See Student Code of Conduct.)
Certain electronic devices - cellular phones, radios, tape or disc players and the like - should not be brought into the classroom. Pagers must be set to vibrate.
Cheating is grounds for dismissal from class and a grade of F. (See Scholastic Ethics Code.)
Incomplete (I) grades are rarely awarded and are always at the discretion of the instructor. Very exceptional circumstances must be present, and the student requesting an I must currently be passing the course with a grade of C or better.

Wikipedia

Wikipedia is the only encyclopedia I know that references my hometown of Sandusky, Ohio and

Wikipedia, like encyclopedia's, are not primary resources and therefore should not be referenced in research papers. However, they are excellent places to learn about a topic and develop knowledge of keywords used in a discipline. These keywords can narrow the search results when using library databases.

Also, a well written entry will cite their references, which can be looked up and used in a paper. (Did you know...PCC Library has over 25,000 journals available online; just copy/paste the title of the article or author into the NEW "360 Search" or the citation linker under "Locate eJournals".)

The word Blog is a combination of words - online web log - weblog was shortened to blog.

What a blog has become is a way for experts, pundits, and whomever to put their ideas and thoughts online. Anyone can express their thoughts online, even you or your students.

Employers, are now searching online to see what type of online presence a prospective employee has. So it is imperative students understand this, especially if they are looking for a professional career.

Wikis can be used as blogs, but they are designed more for collaboration, while a blog is not editable from visitors, responses from visitors can be added if a blog is set-up for that.

Google has created an online office type product, they call "Google docs". Anyone with a Google email account can create, edit and share word doc, excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint type presentations.
